Does Prague Have a Digital Nomad Visa?

2023 - 2025

In July 2023, the Czech Republic launched its Digital Nomad Program, aiming to attract skilled professionals, particularly in the IT & STEM sector, to live and work remotely within its borders. Initially, the program was open to citizens from eight countries: the United States, the United Kingdom & Northern Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. As of 2025, the program has expanded to include citizens from Brazil, Mexico, and Singapore, and now also welcomes STEM and marketing specialists with relevant qualifications.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of the specified countries.

  • Professional Background: The program is primarily designed for IT & STEM professionals and, as of 2025, marketing specialists. Applicants should either hold a higher education degree in relevant fields or possess at least three years of professional experience.

  • Employment Status: Eligible individuals can either be:

    • Employees: Working remotely for a foreign employer.

    • Freelancers: Self-employed individuals holding or in the process of obtaining a Czech trade license (Živnostenské oprávnění).

  • Financial Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate a monthly income of at least 1.5 times the average gross annual salary in the Czech Republic.

Application Process:

  • Preparation: Gather necessary documents, including proof of citizenship, professional qualifications or experience, employment status, and financial means.

  • Submission: Submit the application through the Czech Republic’s embassies or consulates in the applicant’s country of residence.

  • Processing: The Ministry of Industry and Trade manages the program, while the Ministry of Interior processes residence permits, typically within 14 days of application.

Benefits:

  • Duration: The initial visa is valid for one year, with the possibility of extension.

  • Family Inclusion: Immediate family members can apply to join the primary applicant, though they are not permitted to seek local employment during their stay.

  • Schengen Area Access: Visa holders can travel within the Schengen Area without additional visas.

Considerations:

  • Tax Obligations: Digital nomads may be subject to Czech taxation on income earned during their stay. It’s advisable to consult with tax professionals to understand obligations in both the Czech Republic and the applicant’s home country.

  • Healthcare: Applicants are required to have international health insurance covering their stay in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic’s Digital Nomad Program reflects the country’s commitment to embracing the evolving landscape of remote work, offering professionals an opportunity to experience its rich culture and vibrant communities while contributing to its economy.
